Question and answer.

Q.
I recently had some paintwork done locally on my Chim, but have noticed little tiny bubbles have appeared in certain areas... is this normal? Should I poke them with a pin?
Al, Bedfordshire

A.
Hello Al,
NO! this not normal! We strongly suggest that you return to the bodyshop and show them the 'bubbles'. They should offer to put this right for you.
'Bubbles' in GRP can be due to:-
1. Trapped solvent. (Coats of primer/paint not allowed to dry long enough before applying next coat)
2. Trapped moisture. (Primer/paint applied in damp or humid conditions, hence moisture trapped between coats)
3. Osmosis. (Very rare in cars, unless submerged in water for long periods of time)
4. Chemical Reaction. (Possible but not normally producing bubbles, usually crazing or cracking)

ONLY SOLUTION TO ANY OF THE ABOVE......
Remove all affected paint and re-apply.

Q.
Hi, can you help please... what type of paint stripper do you recommend on fibre-glass. I have an old Elan I am trying to restore.
Many thanks, Chris.
Northampton.

A.
Hello Chris,
We do NOT recommend the use of paint stripper on GRP - we have tried most of the strippers on the market and have not found one that does NO damage to the gel-coat surface, therefore creating even more work. The safest way to remove old layers of paint etc., is by hand using abrasives.  Laborious, but you will not give yourself problems later.  We suggest starting off using a coarse grit of abrasive - about 80G - with an electric sanding machine on the flat areas, and then it's down to old-fashioned elbow grease for the edges, and curved areas - preferably with blocks fashioned to suit.
Labour of love.... but think of the satisfaction when it is ready for painting!
